Baseball Cards Investments Change With Each Game

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — That box of old baseball cards in your closet could be worth more than you think.

Calvin Liu broke out his baseball card collection and he's wondering if now is the time to sell. Some collectors like Liu are looking to sell off their more valuable players when the stars are on a hot streak.

The buyers mostly come online, and they're banking on that player staying hot and turning into a worthwhile hold, or perhaps making a quick turnaround transaction after a no-hitter or big hitting performance.

The most marketable and valuable San Francisco Giants player currently is catcher Buster Posey. One autographed card that was one of only 25 made could go for $2,500.

Liu's sports cards store would be happy to sell that to you, but not one particular card. He turned down a $40,000 offer for an autographed card of the Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper.

"I didn't think he's reached his potential yet," he said.

For players that have reached their potential and then some, those cards of stars from days gone by will always be the most valuable. A Mickey Mantle rookie card from 1962 recently fetched $161,000.

As far as local prospects, Liu recommends Rocklin native and Sacramento River Cat Andrew Susac, saying his autograph would be a good get.

In the end, everything boils down to one thing—what happens on the ball field.
