Assemblyman Ian Calderon Backs Prop. 50 Initiative Inspired By Uncle's Charges

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A California lawmaker is contributing to a ballot measure that stemmed from allegations of bribery against his uncle.

Assemblyman Ian Calderon has given about $40,000 from his ballot measure committee to support a measure aimed at withdrawing lawmakers' pay.

The Whittier Democrat's uncle, Ron Calderon, was serving in the state Senate when he and two other senators were suspended amid felony accusations in 2014. Another uncle, former Assemblyman Tom Calderon, was also implicated.

Proposition 50 would allow lawmakers to halt suspended colleagues' paychecks. It appears on the June 7 primary ballot.

Ian Calderon is not connected to the corruption charges.

Calderon's expenditure is the first for the initiative. More than $30 million has been raised for November ballot measures.
