First Case Of Zika Virus Confirmed In Solano County

SOLANO COUNTY (CBS13) – Health officials say a Solano County resident has been diagnosed with the Zika virus.

The announcement was made on Friday. According to the Solano County Department of Health and Social Services, the patient had recently traveled to Central America.

It is the first confirmed case of Zika virus in Solano County.

Health officials stress that there is no risk to Solano County residents.

"The virus, which is primarily transmitted by two species of invasive mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are not native to the Bay Area and have no established population here," said Michael Stacey, Deputy Health Officer for Solano County, in a release.

The virus spreads primarily through mosquito bites. It can also be sexually transmitted.

Back in February, health officials announced that a person had been diagnosed with Zika virus in Yolo County. That person had also been abroad, officials said.

Doctors and health experts gathered at UC Davis on Thursday to discuss the outbreak and what can be done to stop it.
