Mysterious, High-Pitched Noise Emanating From Sacramento 7-Eleven Stores

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — A mysterious high-pitched noise has people on edge in Sacramento County.

They say it's coming from several convenience stores around the area, and now they want to know where the noise is coming from, and if it will ever stop.

People have complained about three locations around the county where they have reported hearing the high-pitched sound -- the 7-Elevens on Watt Avenue and Elkhorn Boulevard; Roseville and Antelope roads; and Watt Avenue next to Golden Corral.
One local describes his experience: "Every time you're here, it doesn't stop, it just doesn't stop."

Laurie Russi hears the ear-piercing noise all the way from her home and says it's coming from the 7-Eleven on Antelope and Roseville roads.

"It's actually two noises and they would sync up and then they would go apart it was really weird," Russi described.

She says the noise has impacted her life so much that she can't stand being in her backyard.

"I don't want to live in my house I want to live in my backyard, and these noises don't make me enjoy my backyard at all. I want to be out there gardening."

A spokeswoman for 7-Eleven corporate declined to comment on the matter, but says many 7-Eleven stores nationwide have "CPTED" -- "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design" technology installed outside their stores.

Some locals believe the noise is being used as a deterrent to keep homeless people from loitering around the businesses, but 7-Eleven corporate says it cannot confirm that statement.

The ear-splitting sound is not getting any approval from the community.

"I don't want come around this area I don't want come to 7-Eleven," said one man who frequently comes to the 7-Eleven on Antelope and Roseville roads.

Russi tells CBS 13 that she plans to write a letter to 7-11 corporate, asking them to turn off the noise.
