Suspected DUI Crash Has Sacramento High School Mourning Students' Deaths

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Sacramento high school ready to celebrate the end of the school year is instead mourning the deaths of two students.

Police say 17-year-olds Daniel Lu and Pearl Espinoza were in a Toyota Camry on Thursday night that was struck by a pickup truck on Power Inn Road near 39th Street. Both later died at the hospital.

Taylor Spier, 23, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.

It was supposed to be Dec Day at West Campus High School, where students would decorate and celebrate with a fun rally. But on Friday, no one was celebrating as they came to terms with the students' deaths.

"The minute I walked in, it was absolute silence," said senior Cecilia Rivera.

Some students asked their parents to pick them up early.

A Facebook account belonging to Spier of Sacramento says she is employed at Lotus Casino on Stockton Boulevard, which is not far from the crash scene.
