Daytime Drive-By Shooting Wounds 5 At Memorial Day Barbecue

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Five people were wounded in a drive-by shooting at a Memorial Day barbecue in South Sacramento on Monday.

A teenager remains in critical condition in the hospital. He's one of the five people who were shot between the ages of 18 and 64.

Catherine Fields' boyfriend was shot twice in the back while a teenage boy next to him was hit in the head.

"I heard five shots, I ran outside and asked my honey is everything OK; he said, 'No call the ambulance,'" she said.

Investigators are calling it a drive-by shooting in broad daylight.

Maria Casto heard five to seven gunshots.

"We were outside in the garage just relaxing, cleaning things up," she said.

It's unclear how many people took off in the getaway car, but investigators say it's clear the shooting wasn't random.

"All of the victims were standing on the sidewalk here on the street, all pretty much associated with the street or live here," said Sacramento County Sheriff's department spokesman Tony Turnbull.

Investigators only have a vague description of the getaway car, saying it's a dark-colored compact car. They're looking for any surveillance or cellphone video from anyone nearby.
