Pit Bull In Deadly Stockton Attack Undergoing Rabies Tests

STOCKTON (CBS13) — A pit bull that was shot and killed by San Joaquin County deputies this weekend after a deadly attack is now being tested for rabies.

Deputies say the pit bull mauled 43-year-old Earl Wayne Stephens to death Saturday afternoon on North Gertrude Avenue.

The two remaining pit bull puppies from the home are now at the animal shelter in Stockton.

Animal control has quarantined the puppies as deputies continue to investigate the mauling.

It is believed that the two puppies are the offspring of the pit bull that attacked and killed Stephens.

San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputies say the pit bull, named Harley, bit the victim several times along his upper body.

According to deputies the man was visiting his friend on North Gertrude Avenue.

They say he walked outside for a cigarette break, and was then attacked by Harley.

Deputies say they were forced to shoot and kill Harley because of the dog's aggression.

CBS 13 tried to reach out to Harley's owner again Monday, but couldn't find him.

The two pit bull puppies will remain at the animal shelter until the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office completes its investigation.

It's not clear whether Harley's owner faces any charges for the attack.
