Large Protest Planned For Sacramento Pastor Who Praised Orlando Nightclub Attack

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Law enforcement officials are preparing for a huge protest on Sunday after a pastor's controversial sermon praising the deaths in an Orlando gay nightclub attack.

An estimated 1,000 people could come to North Sacramento protest the pastor of Verity Baptist Church.

Organizers of the protest are working around the clock to make sure things are ready for Sunday. They say more than 1,000 people have RSVP'd, with many coming in from out of town. Given the emotionally charged nature of the demonstration, law enforcement is preparing for big crowds.

More than 100 people from the LGBT community came out on Wednesday night to protest Pastor Roger Jimenez.

A high number of people plan to come in from out of town, and many of those out-of-towners are supporters of Jimenez like one pastor coming from Arizona encouraging people to come out.

Sacramento Sheriff's deputies have been in communication with both sides and will have a big presence around the church on Sunday to keep the peace and make sure things don't get out of hand.

"We have requested there be no weapons at the event whatsoever and that has been made clear to both sides," said sheriff's spokesman Tony Turnbull.
