Teen Shot, Killed By Deputies In Carmichael After Leading Chase

CARMICHAEL (CBS13) – Investigators are looking into what led to a deputy-involved shooting in Carmichael on Saturday evening that killed a 17-year-old.

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies report they spotted a silver Honda Civic driving erratically past El Camino and Walnut Avenues and tried to pull the driver over.

The driver sped off and led deputies on a chase which ended about five minutes later on Horton Lane.

Deputies say the driver wasn't listening to their commands and started backing into them.

"'Put your hand up, get out of the car,'" witness Tammie Vitto said she heard the deputies say. "Then I heard four or five more popping noises."

The deputy who shot the suspect is a 12-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Monday morning, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the suspect as 17-year-old Sergey Makarenko.

He is now on paid administrative leave, per usual procedure after an officer-involved shooting, as the investigation continues.
