Linden Family's Heirloom Accidentally Sold At Garage Sale

LINDEN (CBS13) - A thrifty purchase at a garage sale turned out to be holding a family heirloom a Linden family had hoped to preserve.

The family says their grandfather's diamond and gold wedding ring was accidentally sold at a garage sale last Saturday in a pair of jeans.

It may sound like a long shot to get it back, but the Scaletta family already has a pretty good idea of who may have it.

"My husband got pale white and said 'Oh my god, the ring! The ring is in the pocket of the jeans," said Cindy Scaletta.

Now she and Morgan Scaletta are doing some detective work to track down a wedding ring that's been in their family for four generations.

"We came home and my husband ran some security video and in fact - it shows on the video the gentleman holding up the jeans, looking at them and purchasing them," she said.

Those jeans have her grandfather's diamond and gold band tucked inside. Her husband put the heirloom in the pants pocket for safekeeping after a rash of burglaries on their street.

Somehow those pants ended up in the garage sale pile that was being manned by Morgan.

"I just felt horrible, absolutely horrible that I let him down like that. That I sold our family ring," he said.

But Morgan not only remembered the buyer, but the distinctive bright-orange Mercedes sports car he took off in. The hope is that by sharing their story, the ring can make its way back.

"It's nobody's fault and we're not looking to accuse anyone," Cindy said. "If you are the person who bought the jeans to please, please, please return the ring."
