International Rugby Hits Bonney Field On Saturday

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Team USA is bringing international rugby to Sacramento on Saturday with the team's final match of the summer at Bonney Field.

Throughout the year, international teams play each other and world rankings are at stake. One Sacramento native is ready to bring home a win against Russia.

USA Rugby is undefeated in its first two annual matches at Bonney Field. After Canada and Japan, it's time for Russia.

Team captain Blaine Scully is gearing up for a big match. He's proud to not only represent his country, but the city he grew up in. He went to Jesuit High School then Cal Berkeley.

"Any opportunity for us hometown kids to play in front of our family and friends is really cool, really enjoy that," he said.

The USA Eagles have been training all week as they prepare to play their final match of the summer. What makes it more special for Scully is having his family there to cheer him on.

"I think my mom has 80 tickets, close to 100, so it's pretty exciting," he said.

Sacramento has become a true hotbed for rugby, and the city even has its own professional team. And fans like Chris Turner are ready to watch them play.

"The face will be painted, the flag will be flying, and the red white and blue will be going," he said.

Under head coach John Mitchell, Saturday's match impacts world rankings.

"We're currently ranked 18th in the world and they're not far away from us, it's important, get a winning performance, more important is we won't be the best in the world, but it's about being the best we can be," he said.
