Reaction To Gun Control Bills As Split As Governor's Choices For His Signature

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Reaction to gun bills signed into law and vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown came quickly from people on both sides.

A former Navy pilot, Kevin Sheridan doesn't hunt, but likes shooting his semi-automatic rifle as a hobby.

"I enjoy shooting with my friends at the range on my property," he said.

He says he's not against common-sense gun laws, but he's disappointed the governor signed a number of gun control measures on Friday.

"Criminals are going to do what they do. It affects the law-abiding citizens," he said.

Rebecca Gonzalez with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence was especially pleased the governors signed one of its priority bills—one that requires vendors to be licensed and ammunition buyers to go through a background check.

The organization believes it's just as important to monitor ammunition sales as it is to keep guns out of the wrong hands.

Gun store owner Josh Deaser says the bills give a false sense of security and have the wrong focus.

"They're not going to do anything," he said. "Bad people will still do bad things."

People on both sides of the gun issue agree on one thing. They predicted the governor would come down about even with signing and vetoes.
