Community Rallies Around Sacramento Man After Comic Book Store Fire

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Sacramento man is drawing support after losing his home and business in a suspicious fire at Midtown comic book store.

Kenny Russell showed off the damage to Big Brother Comics on J Street in Midtown Sacramento.

"A lot of things melted," he said.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the rear of the store and spread to the second floor. Fans are now running nonstop to blow smoke out of the business.

His apartment is next door, and now he's left without his home and business of the last 11 years.

"This is my job, so I'm making nothing right now," he said. "I hope to find a new place to live and a new place to set up shop as soon as possible."

Firefighters were able to stop the flames before they burned the most expensive items. But Kenny is concerned smoke damage could still make many of the collectible cards, comics, graphic novels and toys worthless.

But he's overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support.

"I never knew I had so many friends," he said. "I have offers for cars vans and moving. I need help finding a new location as soon as possible. It's been amazing and it's keeping me grounded."

He's determined to get back in business.

"It's my lifelong dream; I love it," he said.
