San Francisco Woman Dies In Rafting Accident On American River

KYBURZ, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a San Francisco woman died during a rafting accident on the south fork of the American River over the weekend.

KCBS reports the accident took place Saturday in unincorporated El Dorado County.

Authorities say a group of people had been rafting in inner tubes on the river when they went through a section of rapids and realized one person was missing.

Sheriff's deputies, along with firefighters from Cal Fire and the El Dorado County Fire Protection District responded and immediately began searching for the victim.

About 45 minutes later, authorities located the female victim submerged in a section of heavy rapids. She was taken from the river and pronounced dead at the scene.

She has been identified as 32-year-old Elaine Yi Mau.

Sheriff's officials have not yet determined whether Mau was wearing a life jacket.
