Reports Of Shots Fired Sparks Multi-Agency Manhunt In Roseville

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) - The hunt for two armed suspects lasted for most of the day on Wednesday.  Roseville Police Department began searching for the men after receiving several calls about shots fired in multiple locations in the city.

"I don't feel good about it," said Janet Hoffman, who was in town visiting family in Roseville.  "All of a sudden, we heard sirens and helicopters!"

Just before 5 a.m. Wednesday, Roseville P.D. received multiple calls about shots fired near the Diamond Oaks neighborhood and near Antelope Creek.  When officers arrived, they saw two men running into the woods near Harding Boulevard.

Roseville police worked along with Rocklin Police Department, Citrus Heights Police Department, CHP and Placer County Sheriff's Office to set up a perimeter around the Greenbelt area.  Just before noon, officers found an AR-15 rifle in a wooded area near the Maya Bow Range. It's still unclear what the men were doing and who they were targeting.

"If you were shooting out there just doing target practicing, it's still illegal in the city of Roseville," said Officer Jerry Wernli, Roseville Police Department. "Depending on the nature of this firearm, it could be illegal possession of a firearm."

The rifle had a silencer, which is illegal to have in California.  Police are still examining the weapon and trying to figure out who the owner is.  As a part of the search effort, officers are gun dogs that can smell gunpowder.

Earlier Wednesday morning, CHP shut down Interstate 80 for several hours, making the morning commute quite the hassle for many drivers.

"My son-in-law had to go back to work and all of the exits were closed," Hoffman said. "He got to work, he just waited it out!"

Around noon, police broke down the perimeter but officers continued to take every possible step to track down the suspects.

"We have to treat it as though it is going to be an attack on people, an attack on law enforcement, though it may not turn out to be that way because you don't know where a threat could be coming from," Officer Wernli said.

No one was injured from the shots fired this morning.
