Rio Linda Man Kayaking At Lake Tahoe Drowns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a kayaker drowned in Lake Tahoe while vacationing with friends and family earlier this week.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports 43-year-old Paul Anthony Aguirre of Rio Linda, California was found floating on the water's surface in area 10 feet deep and 300 yards off of the El Dorado Beach shoreline.

The incident was reported Tuesday afternoon when family members noticed Aguirre's vacant kayak floating in the lake. Police say his life jacket was still inside the kayak. Several marina employees began CPR and transported him to a nearby pier before emergency crews arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Investigators say they believe the kayak likely capsized because of the 13 to 15 mph winds blowing at Lake Tahoe. The water was also about 69 degrees, possibly leading to hypothermia.
