Pipe Bomb Found On American River Trail Behind Cal Expo

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The latest on a suspicious device along the American River Parkway Trail:

2:30 p.m.

Police confirm the device found was a plastic pipe bomb which appeared to have already been set off. A bomb squad used a robot to detonate the pipe again.

Investigators aren't sure what the magnitude of the damage would have been if the pipe bomb exploded.

It is unclear who is behind the pipe bomb. Detectives are unsure if the incident is related to similar incidents last year where suspicious devices were also found in the same area.

1:01 p.m.

A part of the American River Parkway Trail is closed due to police activity early Monday afternoon.

Sacramento police say they are investigating an explosive device. A bomb squad is currently trying to determine if it's live.

Authorities have closed off the trail from Cal Expo (mile 6) to Campus Commons (mile 7.5).

It is unclear when the trail will reopen.

More information to come.
