Calaveras County Man Working To Rebuild After Stagecoach Fire Destroys Home

CALAVERAS (CBS) - Wildfires in the Calaveras County area have only destroyed one home and a few out buildings this fire season. We spoke with the homeowner who's working to get back on his feet.

"Try and see if you can find something you might be able to use," said Scott Bohanna digging through what's left of his home.

"This is what I've been sifting through," Bohanna continued pointing a dust and rubble.

His house was leveled by fire.

"Came up here and it's just devastation," he said. "Anything electric was just a puddle."

Bohanna owned the home on Stage Coach Road for about a year. It was paid for, but not insured at the time of the fire.

"I got the phone call you didn't want to hear," said Bohanna.

He was out of town when the Stage Coach fire started on July 12th. It burned 35 acres. It's the only home to burn in the Calaveras region this year.

Firefighters were delayed in getting to Bohanna's house. They arrived on the other side of Stagecoach, The bridge was washed out and the road doesn't connect.

Bohanna says a friend watching his home heard crackling, loaded up his dog, Zeus and escaped.

"They had less than three minutes I guess from the time it burned about a thousand feet down the hill and came over the house," said Bohanna.

He's now living in a camper that he got from a friend for $200 and showering outside.

"I got the garden hose set up with the sprinkler head on it," said Bohanna with a smile.

His home, and motorcycles burned. His possessions destroyed.

"I just can't get that stuff back," said Bohanna, "that's just unfortunate."

But through it all, Bohanna plans to rebuild and move on.

"Try and find the bright end of the picture to look at," said Bohanna.

The cause of the fire is believed to be arson. The Calaveras Sheriff's Department is asking the public for information. .

Friends are raising money to help Bohanna get back on his feet.
