Northern California Mother, Son Among 4 Dead In Plane Crash

COLUMBIA, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California family of four is dead after a small plane crashed and burned as it tried to land on a runway Wednesday.

The Modesto Bee reports Friday (http://bit.ly/2aD4z21) that the deceased are 72-year-old Mary Chandler and her husband, 68-year-old Claude Chandler.

The pilot of the 1958 Cessna 310B was Mary's son, 43-year-old Daniel Kruetzfeldt. Also on the plane was Daniel's wife, Kristen Kruetzfeldt. A family friend says the Kruetzfeldts have three children.

Witnesses said they saw the plane coming in to the airport, hitting wing first and making a sharp left into dry grass and rocks.

About 110 planes use the Columbia Airport in Tuolumne County, about 130 miles east of San Francisco.

There is no air traffic control at the airport.
