Nonprofit Aims To Open Safehouse For Victims Of Human Trafficking In Solano County

VACAVILLE (CBS13) - There's an effort underway to open up a safehouse for victims of human trafficking in Solano County.

"We're hoping to house six to eight women and provide them with a safe shelter to be able to stabilize," says Tina Milliken of New Beginnings Ministry.

Nonprofit organization New Beginnings Outreach is raising money to help bring attention to the growing national issue.

The California Department of Justice says California is one of the nation's top four destination states for sex trafficking. And now New Beginning's organizers are hosting a fundraiser in August in Vacaville to raise money for a home that would not only offer safe housing but a place for victims to rehabilitate.

"A lot of these women are coming off the streets, from prostitution, and they need a safe place to go, to rehabilitate, to become self-sufficient, and to provide for themselves," says Milliken.

The fundraiser is called Evening of Yesteryear. It's taking place Saturday, August 13 at Three Oaks Community Center in Vacaville.

"I want to help them with the love that me and my team will be able to give them, but also education, and mental health if they need it," says Irvina Edwards of New Beginnings Ministry. "Our goal is to get these girls and love on them, and make them feel worthy."

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $50, $45 for veterans and it includes dinner and entertainment. The night will also be honoring military veterans and law-enforcement.
