Galt Cracking Down On Car Sales On City Streets

GALT (CBS13) — Galt city leaders have approved a new ordinance that makes it illegal to sell personal trucks or cars on city streets.

John White has a used pickup truck for sale, and he's hoping to close a deal really soon.

Personal cars and trucks for sale often line C Street in Galt.

"Everybody comes and checks the cars out," said resident Rudy Adora. "It's not hurting nobody."

But the Galt City Council believes it could. Wednesday night, it passed an ordinance making it illegal to sell cars or trucks on city streets.

City leaders say people from out of town are parking their cars and hoping to get a sale. They believe it's creating a dangerous conflict between pedestrians and traffic, and they think the ordinance will improve safety.

White says she understands the spirit behind the ordinance, but believes people like him love selling on the street, because they don't trust people online pretending to be buyers.

"There's some scammers. More so now. I've got this on craigslist and had a couple scammers that have come after me," he said.

Galt's police chief says they'll hand out warnings over the next few weeks, but in some cases, vehicles could be towed.
