Homes Dating Back To Mid-20th Century Burn In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Two houses from the mid-20th century were seriously damaged in a heavy fire that poured smoke into the surrounding sky near downtown Los Angeles.

City fire spokesman Peter Sanders said firefighters were called shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday and found heavy smoke pouring from a three-story wood-sided home.

The blaze quickly spread to another home next door. Flames roared through the roof and sent columns of black smoke into the air, which at one point forced firefighters off the roofs of the homes.

About 140 firefighters battled the flames.

The homes are about 50 to 70 years old.

A third home had minor damage on one side, Sanders said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
