Who Is Dropping Rocks Onto Cars From A Stockton Overpass?

STOCKTON (CBS13) – Victims reported rocks falling from the sky and smashing windshields and police say it's no accident.

"You think that someone has shot at you because of the speed you're going," said Windell Bridgewater who was hit a few weeks ago.

Windell was driving home on Hammer Lane when a rock fell from the sky and smashed in his windshield.

"What happens if someone does get killed," he said.

Windell is one of several victims whose car was pelted while driving under the overpass. His granddaughter said the same thing happened to her.

"It can cause accidents. Someone can truly get hurt especially if you're going that way," said Markena Bridgewater.

While Markena was hit a few weeks ago, many of the witnesses hit this past weekend reported seeing kids in the area.

In fact, when our camera was rolling we caught one with a rock in his hand.

Stockton police said throwing rocks at vehicles is a serious offense that won't be taken lightly.

"This is a felony and we take these cases very seriously because there is the risk of people getting injured or even killed," said Officer Joe Silva with the Stockton Police Department.

Seven reports were filed late Saturday and Sunday, but when officers responded, the suspects were gone.

"Parents need to realize that this is something they need to explain to the kids but they just can't do," Silva said.

There have been other local cases involving rocks and moving vehicles.

In February three teens were ticketed for placing rocks on a South Sacramento light rail train track. No major damage was reported and no one was hurt.

In June, a Stockton Police cruiser was damaged when rocks were thrown at it from an overpass.

Police say about 75 to 100 rocks have been thrown from the overpass. The damage is estimated at $2,000.
