Judge Tosses Bernie Sanders Supporters' Lawsuit By Seeking To Delay June Primary Election

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A lawsuit aiming to delay California's June primary has been dismissed by a federal court.

The lawsuit filed in the weeks leading up to California's June primary sought to extend California's election registration deadline until the day of the election. The plaintiffs argued at least two counties hadn't provided information notifying voters they could register to vote in the Democratic presidential primary. California law set the registration deadline for May 23.

A judge declined to extend the registration and set the hearing for August, more than two months after the primary election.

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla called the lawsuit an unnecessary distraction in an already busy season for elections officials.

Sanders lost the California primary to eventual nominee Hillary Clinton and bowed out of the race shortly thereafter.
