Downtown, Midtown Parking Rate Increases To Start; Only Warnings Issued For Now

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Starting Thursday night, meter hours will increase to 10 p.m. in downtown Sacramento and 8 p.m. in parts of midtown.

It’s all in preparation for the grand opening of the Golden 1 Center.

Keep in mind, when large arena events occur all street meter parking within three blocks of the arena will cost a flat rate of $18.75 when you park for three hours or more.

Parking officials say they will leave warnings instead of citations on cars until October 1.

  1. Uber/Lyft will likely hike their rates, knowing that more people will avoid driving to/parking in downtown-midtown Sac. Also the parking enforcement will be stricter than usual, because the city needs to find the money to repay the arena construction loans.

Besides, are the Kings really worth it? Nope. It looks like another 50-loss season. Better choice: watch them lose on TV, avoid the downtown traffic and parking tickets.

  2. I wonder if the new meters are sophisticated enough to summon an enforcement officer *on their own*, when time is up. Instead of waiting for a patrol to spot the expired meter. It can’t be that hard. Just like the smart utility meters that report gas and electricity usage remotely over their own Wi-Fi network, the parking meters will do the same.

Yes, they do summon parking officers. They also flash red so one can tell at a glance that they are out of time.
