Inmate Dies 2 Hours After Being Booked Into Fresno Jail

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a Fresno County jail inmate died two hours after being booked.

Fresno Police spokesman Tony Botti says 24-year-old Andrew Zavala had been placed on a cell at 7:18 p.m. Thursday on a felony charge of probation violation and shortly after told a correctional officer he wasn't feeling well.

Botti says a nurse checked his vital signs and Zavala was then taken by ambulance to a hospital for further evaluation.

He says Zavala died at 9:17 p.m. at Community Regional Medical Center.

Botti says a cause of death is pending the results of autopsy and toxicology tests.
