No Charges Against Rep. Ami Bera For Father's Election Fraud

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — No charges will be filed against a Congressman whose father was the subject of a campaign contribution investigation.

The Department of Justice said on Friday it has concluded its investigation, and no further charges will be filed in the case.

Babulal Bera, 83, was sentenced on Aug. 18 to 12 months and a day for election fraud. He was charged with illegally funneling more than a quarter of a million dollars into his son's campaign.

Babulal is the father of Rep. Ami Bera, who is running for re-election against Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones in what is traditionally a closely split district. The district covers the eastern part of Sacramento County and Elk Grove.

UPDATE: Ami Bera has released a statement on Friday's news:

After conducting an exhaustive investigation, this case was closed after the US Attorney stated that my campaign and I had been fully cooperative and that neither I nor my staff were targets of this investigation. In this matter, I have never believed it to be appropriate for me to comment on how authorities handle their job, and I trust the decisions they made in the pursuit of this case. My father made a grave mistake, but moving forward I'm just focused on helping my parents get through the next year.
