Vista Del Lago High Parents Voice Concerns After 2 Students Struck By Drivers In A Day

FOLSOM (CBS13) - Broadstone Parkway and Golf Links Drive in Folsom is a very busy intersection.

"Everybody should slow down," said parent Erin McGuckin.

It's just yards away from Vista Del Lago High School.

Tuesday, two students were hit by motorists nearby.

"The first incident happened before school," said Daniel Thigpen with the Folsom Cordova Unified School District.

School officials say one student was on his bike when he entered the intersection. The driver saw him at the last minute.

"The student might have been crossing against the traffic light, may have been difficult to see," Thigpen said.

And then hours later and blocks away from the first accident, another student was hit.

"The second incident happened after school," Thigpen said.

Both students were rushed to the hospital.

"We have 1700 students here. Many are biking, walking, skate boarding, driving to campus," Thigpen said.

Both students are now recovering.

"Teachers and all of us were talking about it," said Vista Del Lago student Alexis Gonzales.

Parents are also talking to their children about the two accidents.

"It's alarming. You want kids to be safe. You want them to be able to go and from school freely and safely," said parent Keith Calcagno.

School officials say being safe is the mutual responsibility of both students and motorist.

"I think the biggest takeaway here is we all play a part in being safe around traffic, especially around schools," Thigpen said.

School officials say both students suffered non-life threatening injuries. No word on any charges facing the drivers.
