Carmichael Boy, 10, Hailed As Hero After Saving Grandma's Life

CARMICHAEL (CBS13) - A ten-year-old boy from Sacramento County is being called a hero by firefighters for saving his grandmother's life.

Now the community plans to honor his efforts.

Alexander Miller's grandmother Leigh Anne Miller tells CBS13 had her grandson not called 911, she could have suffered brain damage or died.

"I remember coming to, and the paramedic said you better thank your grandson; that's the first thing I heard," recalled Leigh Anne Miller on Friday.

She doesn't remember much from the morning of Aug. 14, when she went into diabetic shock.

Miller has been a type-one diabetic for 57 years and has lost most of her vision from her illness. She has a guide dog that helps her get around the house.

It was her dog that ran to her grandson Alexander, who was spending the night, and nudged him for help.

Miller says Alexander quickly jumped up from his bed and called 911.

"I woke up around 6:02 a.m. and she suddenly started moving and holding her stomach and she couldn't talk," said Alexander in the 911 recording CBS13 obtained from Sac Metro Fire.

"We are pretty proud of him and very impressed," said Fire Captain Carl Simmons.

Simmons responded to Alexander's 911 call on Aug. 14 and says it was the boy's bravery and maturity that saved his grandmother's life.

"He knew everything about his grandmother's medical history, including the medications she takes," Simmons said.

Miller says her grandson would even help administer her insulin shots.

She was in good spirits Friday, but looking back at what happened that morning, Miller says having her grandson over that night was a blessing.

"I love him to death and every day I thank that he is my grandson."

Alexander will be given a certificate for his actions by the Sacramento Metro Fire Chief on Oct. 13.
