Suspect Dies After Police Hit Him With Taser

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) – A man suspected of making criminal threats died after Burbank police stunned him with a Taser outside a home where another man armed with a gun barricaded himself during a standoff, officials said.

Police responded to the suburban neighborhood Tuesday evening following reports that someone had been making threats, Sgt. Claudio Losacco said. A man in his 60s confronted the officers outside the house and one officer discharged his Taser to subdue him, causing the man to collapse, he said.

That’s when a second man came to the door armed with a handgun and threatened police, according to Losacco. The officers took cover and called for backup.

Meanwhile the first man was pulled away and attended to by paramedics. He died at the scene.

The cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office, which did not immediately identify the man.

The second man barricaded himself in the home for around 40 minutes before he surrendered and was arrested, Losacco said. His name was not immediately released.

Police did not identify the relationship between the two men.

The death was being investigated Wednesday by Burbank police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, Losacco said.

No details were immediately released on the alleged criminal threats that drew police to the home about 10 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
