Modesto Woman Shot and Killed After Allegedly Approaching Police with Knives

MODESTO (CBS13) - A Modesto woman was shot and killed by police after a disturbance call early Saturday morning.

The shooting happened at about 3 a.m. on the 1500 block of Queens Avenue.

Police say when they arrived, the 53-year old woman was outside the home carrying several knives; police say she then charged at the officers.

"I woke up suddenly and startled," said Sherril Shelton, a neighbor.

Shelton woke up to the blaring sirens and police lights that lit up his neighborhood early Saturday morning.

"It was almost solid police cars curb to curb," Shelton said.

When he walked outside to see what was going on, a neighbor, Glenn Jackson, said his daughter was shot and killed by police.

According to Modesto police, Jackson first called 911 around 2 a.m. reporting his 53-year old daughter was intoxicated and vandalizing the inside of his home.

"There was a piece of broken furniture or a stool and a bunch of broken ceramics out the window," said Shelton.

When police arrived, the woman was no longer at the home. They left but were called back about an hour later.  That's when officers say they found the woman outside the home who was armed with several knives.

"She did come at them rapidly with the weapons raised," said Heather Graves, a spokeswoman for Modesto police.

According to Graves, the officers deployed bean bags and a stun gun, and one officer shot the woman.

"We don't know at what point any of those weapons were deployed, and that's under investigation," Graves added.

Shelton says he's known the Jackson's for the past 30 years and says he has seen police activity at the home before.

The Jackson family declined to comment on the incident, but they confirm the woman was a family member.

Shelton tells CBS13 he didn't think an officer-involved shooting would happen where he lives. The shooting rocked the Modesto neighborhood, and the remnants serve as a reminder of the disturbance that turned deadly.

This is the fourth officer-involved shooting in Modesto this year.

Police say the three officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.
