Child, 11, Found Shot In Stockton; Police Investigating

STOCKTON (CBS13) - A 11-year-old Stockton boy is in critical condition after being hit by a gunshot.

Police are not searching for suspects. Investigators believe the shooting may have been accidental, after locating a gun underneath the boy.

The scene is along the 8900 block of Ledgewood Avenue.

So far, investigators don't know who's gun it is or how it was fired. The heart-breaking scene has left the family shaken.

"He likes to dance, and he's a really, really loving," Monisha Mimmit said. "We just want to make sure he's okay."

Mimmit described her 11-year-old cousin hit by a gunshot in his front yard.

"We don't know what happened but you just have to be careful," Mimmit said. "I don't know."

As police investigated the shooting scene, the boy's older brother sat on the sidewalk looking to a higher power, praying.

A neighbor says both brothers were outside together playing when the gunshot went off.

"He was running in the yard and then I heard the pop, and after that he started crying right there," said neighbor Adolpho Cuellar.

Cuellar says it gunfire confused him at first.

"Got shot how? How? I was surprised because I don't see nobody drive by or nothing," Cuellar said.

So far Investigators believe the shooting was accidental.

"Because right now we don't have any evidence indicating this was a drive-by shooting or that anyone else may have shot his boy, but it's still an active investigation," said Officer Joe Silva with the Stockton Police Department.

Officers are questioning the boy's brother as a witness.

Investigators are trying to find any other witnesses who may have seen anything.
