Baby Found Safe After Alleged Abduction That Prompted Amber Alert

NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) — A 7-month-old baby boy is safe after an alleged abduction and an intense search that focused on a small mountain community in Sierra County.

The baby's biological mother is in jail, accused of snatching the infant from his crib in a Guerneville home over the weekend.

This baby's grandmother has legal custody of the boy and reported the alleged abduction.

Law enforcement officers doted on 7-month-old Henry Massey, holding the baby in their arms, safe and unharmed following the alleged kidnapping and statewide Amber Alert.

Baby Henry's alleged kidnapper is his biological mother Hannah Ashley.

Ashley was taken into custody as she walked down Main Street in Downieville, with baby Henry Hidden in a cloth carrier.

Ashley's hair was chopped short and dyed, her appearance altered from the photos sent out by police in their Amber Alert.

Downieville's Nicole Kaiser identified Ashley and pointed her out to nearby officers.

Hillary Lozano watched as officers quickly surrounded Ashley.

"She did yell at them 'Leave me alone,' but she didn't fight back really hard physically," Lozano said. "I think that was maybe because she had the baby with her."

Authorities from several agencies descended on this mountain town after a good Samaritan recognized Ashley's car from the Amber Alert photos.

Massey was reported missing after Ashley allegedly took the infant from his grandmother's home on Sunday. An Amber Alert was activated in the disappearance on Monday afternoon.

A reported sighting of the vehicle on Monday evening prompted a search in Sierra County that didn't turn up the vehicle. The next morning, a Sierra County Sheriff's deputy saw the car on Highway 49 heading toward Downieville, but that officer lost sight of the vehicle—the vehicle was spotted at around 6:40 a.m., but sunrise wasn't until 7:26 a.m. in the area.
