CHP Officer Shoots Suspect In North Highlands Area

5:35 p.m. UPDATE: The man shot by two CHP officers after they say he pointed a gun at them has died from his injures.

The officers had responded to the scene to find a man waving a gun in the middle of the street. They say he did not drop the gun and instead pointed it at them, prompting them to fire.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) - Authorities are investigating after a California Highway Patrol officer shot a suspect early Friday afternoon.

The scene is near Date Avenue and Tyler Street, just off of Interstate 80 and Madison Avenue.

The shooting happened at around 2 p.m. on Friday. Witnesses say the man was standing in the street and waving a gun.

The CHP confirms the officer found a man with a gun acting erratically. Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Tony Turnbull says the suspect pointed the gun, prompting at least one officer to open fire.

CHP confirms one of their officers shot a suspect. No officers were hurt in the incident, CHP says. The condition of the suspect, who has been transported to the hospital, is unknown at this time.

It is unclear what led up to the shooting.

The incident is just down the street from CHP's North Sacramento area office.
