Slick Roads Bring Danger For Trick-Or-Treaters

VACAVILLE (CBS13) — Rain caused slick and potentially dangerous conditions for thousands of people trick or treating Monday night.

The mad dash for candy filled buckets quickly turned into dodging puddles and a search for cover for hundreds in Vacaville.

"Now we are in the rain. We got a few more minutes because we started at four o'clock so I'm doing really good and then we are out of here," said Hope Carter who was spending Halloween with her son.

Hundreds of people in Vacaville watched the weather closely and took part in the annual business Halloween candy give
away.

The mix of rainy weather and an active night for people strolling the streets creates a potentially dangerous situation.

"When it's raining and it's dark, it makes it that much more difficult for people to see people crossing the streets," said Lt. Chris Polen with the Vacaville Police Department.

Miles away in Elk Grove , Polen's words played out. Elk Grove police say an 8-year-old was hit when the child ran into the road after leaving an event at Creekside Christian church. The youngster is expected to be OK.

"The mindset on Halloween night is always the safety of our public, of our community," said Polen.

According to the American Automobile Association, Halloween is the deadliest single day for pedestrians.

The department of motor vehicles says children are twice as likely to be hit and killed by a car on Halloween, compared to any other day of the year.

"Sticking with the crowd of people," said Carter, "just going with the flow."

A fun filled night where safety is a top priority for many.
