Voters Form Long Lines At Polling Places Across Southern California

SACRAMENTO (AP/CBS13) - The Latest on voting in California (all times local):

10 a.m.

Frustrations ran high at a Los Angeles polling place as voters were left waiting when ballot marking devices didn't arrive on time.

Voter Bob Corbett said he was in line well before the 7 a.m. Tuesday opening at Delano Recreation Center in Van Nuys, but was told voting would be delayed.

The line snaked around the building until the devices arrived around 9 a.m., when voting finally began.

Corbett said he was frustrated but would wait however long it took to cast his ballot.

Elections officials didn't immediately say what caused the delay.

Long lines were reported at polling places across Los Angeles County. The county's 4,523 polls will close at 8 p.m.

At least 150 people were waiting before voting began Tuesday at 7 a.m. at the North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Library in Los Angeles. Long lines were reported at polling places across the city as voters hoped to cast their ballots before heading to work.

In Northern California, a steady stream of cars pulled up to an absentee ballot drop-off station outside a courthouse in Oakland.

A record 19.4 million state residents have registered to vote, and elections officials are bracing for high turnout.

California elections officials are braced for robust election turnout, confused first-time voters and the prospect of long lines Tuesday for the presidential election. A record 19.4 million state residents have registered.

Data tracking firm Political Data Inc. is reporting about 5 million people by Monday had already cast ballots in early voting.

Many marked their ballots at home, but elections officials throughout the state also reported heavy in-person crowds at polling sites over the weekend and Monday.

Los Angeles County's Registrar-Recorder spokesman Mike Sanchez says some voters waited in line for three hours or more to cast ballots over the weekend. Nearly 18,000 early ballots were cast in the county over the weekend.

Kim Alexander, president of the nonprofit and nonpartisan California Voter Foundation, predicted long lines for Election Day.
