Cab Driver Hits Female Passenger After Argument In Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A hit-and-run in Sacramento injured a woman and landed a taxi driver behind bars.

Sacramento police say the suspect allegedly hit one of his passengers with his cab Friday morning after an argument.

Police have identified the suspect as Fawad Ahmad, and his fleet manager has confirmed Ahmad has been a driver with SMART Cab for about five months.

"It got me totally off guard, I wouldn't even believe that it was him," said Aman Singh, a fleet manager for SMART Cab.

Singh says he was in disbelief Saturday night when he learned Ahmad, one of his drivers, was arrested for allegedly hitting a woman with his cab and then taking off.

"I couldn't even think that he's the Fawad who would have any problems like that," Singh said.

According to police, Ahmad had dropped off a 38-year old woman and a family member near the intersection of 16-th Street, when he was summoned to come back because the woman forgot her cell phone in his cab.

Ahmad and the woman got into a verbal argument, which police say ended when Ahmad allegedly ran the woman's leg over and drove off.

"He never gave me any reason to think he would get angry or get into an argument," Singh added.

CBS13 reached out to several cab drivers from other companies around Sacramento on Saturday, but they were afraid to speak on camera.

Several drivers said Ahmad was known to be aggressive.

A Yellow Cab manager confirms Ahmad was employed by the company until six months ago, but wouldn't say why.

"This is the first time this issue has happened, and it's pretty big," said Singh.

According to Singh, there haven't been any complaints about Ahmad but says now his company is going to review the incident.

Singh says if Ahmad's charges are confirmed:

"We will have his permit revoked and he will not be driving for us or any other company."

Ahmad was arrested Friday for assault with a deadly weapon.

Sacramento police are not identifying the female victim; she suffered some bruising to her leg.
