Lead Found At 11 Homes Near Sacramento Gun Range

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Elevated levels of lead have been discovered in the yards of 11 homes near a shuttered gun range that was found to be contaminated with lead dust.

The Sacramento Bee reports that tests of the soil in 29 yards near the now closed James. G. Mangan Rifle and Pistol Range found that 11 had lead above the state's Department of Toxic Substances Control screening level for residences.

Parks director Christopher Conlin says the city will likely remove contaminated soil from the yards.

The range was closed in 2014 but city officials did not clean the facility or notify people who used or live by an adjacent park of the possible lead contamination at that time.

The range roof and vents have since been sealed to stop the spread of lead dust.
