How Will Trump Presidency Affect Covered California Plans?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to get rid of parts of Obamacare, and it has a lot of people asking questions ahead of Covered California's Dec. 15 deadline.

"I don't have any health insurance actually, I'm on disability and lost my job."

Melessa Jones is one of many worried Californians whose healthcare plans are now up in the air. Battling two different conditions, Jones is now relying on family to foot her medical bills.

"I can only imagine what's gonna happen after they cut all of that off; it's gonna be chaos," Jones added.

Jones believes president-elect Trump is going to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, months after he publicly vowed to undo some of Obama's work in healthcare.

Trump's announcement is a real concern for one woman who doesn't believe she should be told what to do with her body.

"As a woman, I'm concerned because I don't have to worry about contraceptives and I hope they remain free and accessible."

Officials with Covered California held a board meeting Thursday, discussing the future of health insurance coverage. Peter Lee, executive director of Covered California, says health plans won't be changing anytime soon.

"Replace is a complicated thing, this is a big law that's been in place for six years. Unwinding it or taking pieces away from it isn't gonna happen overnight,it's gonna take time," said Lee.

Lee says Californians can breathe, because health care plans are already set for 2017.

Now, Jones is resuming the job hunt to qualify for health care coverage under Covered California; her permanent health conditions still have her worried about the future of her coverage.

"I'm gonna have to figure out how I'm gonna pay $400 a month just for my mental medications," Jones said.

Health care officials say this is a waiting game for everyone, and they encourage Californians to enroll by Dec. 15 to get coverage by the first of the year.
