Modesto Couple Finds Dog While Donating Kidney To Marine's Father

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (CBS13) — A dog stolen from a Humane Society is back home after being rescued and returned by a couple from Modesto that was in town to donate a kidney to the father of a fellow Marine.

Five-year-old Cleo was found cold, wet, shivering, just 48 hours after she was taken from the Humane Society by Ricky and Nicole Fells of Modesto.

"She was all dirty and stuff and just looked miserable being out in the rain, but she's doing good now."

They found Cleo by their hotel. His wife immediately took to Facebook to find out where Cleo belonged.

"They weren't here to rescue a dog, but they took that time out and extra effort and really made a big difference in trying to get her back safely to the San Antonio Humane Society."

Cleo's life wasn't the only one saved last week by Ricky and Nicole. The reason they were both in town from California? Ricky was donating a kidney to the father of a fellow Marine.

"My friend Daniel who I served with is in the military still, and his dad has been on dialysis for a while. His kidneys started failing in 2009 and they've been searching for a donor," he said.

But nobody in that family could donate. But just as Nicole went to social media to find Cleo's home, his friend Daniel had gone Facebook to find a kidney, and Ricky found the post.

"I told my wife I've got to try and come to find out I was a perfect match for him blood type and everything turned out good I flew out to Texas a few weeks later."

Little did he know just a day after giving a kidney to save a man's life, he'd be saving a second life of another mammal just as grateful.

"We were completely overwhelmed and excited that they took that extra step and posted photos of her took care of her until we were able to get there."
