Parents Plead For Answers After Hit-And-Run Nearly Kills Toddler

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A mother and father of a 3-year-old nearly killed in a hit-and-run are pleading for the public's help to find the driver.

It happened Friday just after 5 p.m. on Willamsbourgh off of Franklin Boulevard and Florin Road.

"I saw the car, the truck, miss my wife and I just saw that car hit my son," said Benjamin Lopez.

The nightmare unfolded before his very eyes, in horror as his son was hit while crossing the street with his mother.

"I didn't know if he was with us and he was just laying there and I was holding his head and this lady started praying and then he just started crying," he said.

It's a dark road across from the Pizza Hut. There's not a crosswalk or a street light, so the family waited for what they thought was a safe moment to cross.

That's when the mother said an SUV sped down the street without lights on and hit her son.

While the driver never stopped, Marissa Lopez said so many others did.

"Had it not been for those certain people who tried to help, I don't know what would've happened," Marissa said.

Miraculously their son Errol survived. After spending five days in the hospital he's back home, but has a long recovery with a fractured skull and punctured spleen.

"Just because were home doesn't mean there isn't any stress because he can't jump with his brothers and say he gets the urge to jump, any little jump could hurt him," she said.

Now they're trying to figure out who did this to their son and kept going.

"I don't know if they've done this before or if they'll do it again, it could've been anybody's 3-year-old," she said.

California Highway Patrol investigated the hit and run, but did not have a license plate or a clear description of the suspect.

"Possibly a black SUV, possibly a Ford that hit the pedestrians. We are looking for that vehicle or for information that could lead us to that party," said Officer Michael Bradley.

Marissa and Benjamin want justice and for the person behind the wheel to know the pain they've caused.

"Nobody, let alone a baby child that should happen to and the people just leave, like an animal in the sense," said Benjamin.

While they may never know, he said his son is a fighter and blessed to have his family home.

"The way he's recovered right now, it's only the grace of God," he said.

The family said the driver appeared to be a woman with another female in the passenger seat. If you have information, call CHP.
