Former Sacramento State Student Among Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire Victims

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — "That should show some of her personality," said Janet Bramby, thumbing through pictures of her daughter, "that great smile she had."

A tenacious and determined young woman is how John and Janet Bramby describe their daughter, Jennifer Mendiola.

Mendiola grew up in the Sacramento area.

"She was a caring, beautiful person who loved music and dancing," said Janet Bramby.

Janet Bramby  says her daughter wasn't a saint but wanted to help people, which is why she studied psychology. Mendiola had recently moved back to the Bay Area.

"We appreciate the fact that she loved and wanted to serve other people," said Bramby.

Mendiola is one of 36 victims of the Ghost Ship fire. She was originally listed as missing, until Wednesday. The thought of Mendiola's final moments haunt her mother.

"Was she a piece of ash? These things are what bother me," said Bramby.

The Bramby's are also having trouble getting information about their daughter. Her estranged husband is the next of kin.

"We were not notified," said John Bramby, "we got notified through her husband."

The grief not yet set in.

"Haven't really had a chance to settle down and really think about her and the loss that we have," said Janet Bramby.

Neighbors like Rene Brooks-Williams have been dropping by. Her kids grew up with Mendiola.

"I was just really stunned Because you know that could've been my child too," said Brooks-Williams.

The community is caring for the couple who are now without their lively middle daughter.

"Just wanted to support her and let her know that we love her," said Brooks-Williams.
