How Can I Keep The Grinch From Flying Off My Lawn During The Storm?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Christmas decorations have been disappearing from people's yards over the last few weeks -- it's been happening all across the valley.

Coupled with a high-wind advisory that is forecast to continue through Thursday, experts suggest homeowners need to secure their outdoor decorations properly.

"We've been doing this ever since we moved here."

This isn't Jordan Bucher's first time outfitting her home with holiday decor.

She has been doing it for the last 15 years, and during that time Bucher says she's gotten enough practice to make her festive decorations resistant to wind and thieves.

"We now dig a deep hole into the ground and place stakes and wooden poles there, so when the wind blows, the sets can brace themselves."

With holiday decoration thefts popping up across the Sacramento Valley in recent weeks, law enforcement says there isn't much else homeowners can do to keep their decorations from being vandalized or stolen -- unless they can afford to re-decorate their lawns every day.

But hardware experts are suggesting a few different hacks, including using stakes, to keep the decorations from flying away.

"Just stick this stake into the ground, zip-tie it and anchor it to the ground," said Fernando Martinez, an employee at Meek's Lumber and Hardware in Rocklin.

For heavy-duty decorations, Martinez recommends using rebar to help keep everything stable.

And if you want to go the extra mile, he says you can cover your lawn decor with tarps.

"Bottom line is this is gonna help with any weather damage," Martinez concluded.

The high-wind advisory is expected to bring gusts of up to 50-miles an hour through Thursday evening.
