Davis Police Investigate Attempted Kidnapping Of 12-Year-Old Girl

DAVIS (CBS13) — Davis police are investigating a report of an attempted kidnapping of a 12-year-old girl.

It happened Wednesday near Oceana Way and Arena Road, an area near two schools in an upscale neighborhood.

"It's unusual for Davis. We usually don't get too many types of these incidents," said Sgt Mike Munoz, with the David Police Department.

He says the 12-year-old girl was walking home from school when a man allegedly jumped out from a fence and tried to grab her.

She was able to break away and ran back to school. She hid in some bushes and called her father, who came to pick her up. They then contacted police.

The young girl described the suspect as a white adult male and about 25 years old. He is tall, somewhere between 6 foot and 6 foot 4 inches. He is described as having an average build, with short black hair and dark eyes.

"They were obviously really close to each other, so she was able to give a good description. His mouth and face were covered with a mask, but other than that, she was able to describe other parts of his body," said Sgt. Munoz.

Munoz says there are still a lot of unknowns in this case, so they are asking for the community's help.

"(We are) contacting neighbors to see if they know anything, If they saw anybody suspicious, and asking for the public's help," explained Munoz.

The police also issued an advisory, which the school district emailed to parents.

"In this particular case, it's really important for us to make sure the all students and parents know what's happening," said Maria Clayton with the Davis Joint Unified School District.

As word got of the investigation, many expressed concern not just for girl's well being, but that their usually quiet town, could be hit with such a case.

"I think it's disgusting. It harms not just the girl, but the whole family involved and neighbors that know that person," said Jane Matteson, who lives in Davis.

"It's devastating. And it's scary. I work with kids. It's heart breaking to think to think that somebody would want to do such a thing," shared Kimberly Teixeira, who lives in Crockett.

Police and the school district have posted information on social media. They are asking anyone with information to contact the Davis Police Department.
