Boy, 13, Riding Bicycle Struck, Killed In North Highlands

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) - Authorities are investigating after a child riding a bicycle was struck and killed Tuesday morning.

The scene is near Palm Avenue and Hillsdale Boulevard.

California Highway Patrol says the incident happened around 8:18 a.m. The 13-year-old boy was reportedly riding on the southbound sidewalk of Hillsdale when he turned right on Palm Avenue.

The boy went right in front of a moving car and was struck and pinned under. He was fatally injured in the incident.

CHP says the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The boy's identity has not been released.

According to a statement from the Twin Rivers Unified School District, the boy was a student at Foothill Ranch Middle School.

The full statement from the district can be found below:

"Our Twin Rivers family is deeply saddened to learn about the death of a Foothill Ranch Middle School student this morning, and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family. The tragic traffic accident happened near Hillsdale Boulevard and Greenholme Drive.

Our Crisis Intervention Team—chaplains, school psychologists and counselors—was immediately dispatched to Foothill Ranch to support students and staff. During difficult times like this, children are often confused and have many questions. It is important for us to have our Crisis Intervention Team there for students to share and process their grief.

It is unfortunate when this type of tragedy occurs, and I want to assure the community that we will do all that is possible to keep our schools a safe and caring place."
