Family Of Teen Who Died After Liquid Meth Sips Awarded $1 Million
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The family of a Mexican teenager who died after sipping liquid methamphetamine while in custody at the San Ysidro Port of Entry has settled a lawsuit against two federal agents for $1 million.
The San Diego Union Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2mUgeM1 ) the agreement in San Diego federal court came more than three years after 16-year-old Cruz Velazquez died after taking several sips from two juice bottles he was carrying in his knapsack.
Court documents show Velazquez initially told two Customs and Border Protection officers he was carrying apple juice. The lawsuit alleged the agents told the teenager to drink the liquid to prove it was fruit juice and not a drug.
The lawsuit alleged wrongful death, assault and battery, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Attorneys for the two officers named in the complaint did not respond to a request for comment.
