DENVER (AP) — President Donald Trump says his government is looking into Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf after she warned the public about an impending immigration raid.

Trump said during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday that “what the mayor of Oakland did the other day was a disgrace.”

He says, “it’s certainly something that we’re looking at with respect to her individually.”

Trump says immigration authorities were ready to take 1,000 people off the streets but that Schaaf’s warning led them to scatter. He says the move made efforts much more dangerous for law enforcement.

The president also said Congress should pass legislation that would strip funding from localities that don’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

He says, “If you want the money, you can’t have the sanctuary cities.”

Four Colorado lawmakers are bringing to the White House their ideas on punishing so-called sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration officials.

Thursday’s meeting with the White House Domestic Policy Council follows the Trump administration’s lawsuit challenging California laws that it says protect immigrants in the country illegally.

Colorado state Rep. Dave Williams says he’s advocating for similar federal action against individual cities and officials for policies that protect immigrants.

The Republican from Colorado Springs says he hopes the California lawsuit filed by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions this week is a warning shot for municipalities that limit cooperate on illegal immigration.

It wasn’t clear if lawmakers from other states were attending the meeting.
