In the FBI documents released Thursday, many of those who knew Jobs praised him, speaking highly of Jobs’ character and integrity and asserting that he always conducted his business dealings in a reputable manner. They recommended him for a post during the George H.W. Bush administration.

The 1991 interviews were part of a background check for an appointment to the President’s Export Council.

The Commerce Department confirmed Thursday that Jobs did serve on the council during the first Bush administration.

Export council members serve in an unpaid capacity and meet at least twice a year, advising the president on trade policy.

One person told FBI agents the Apple co-founder’s enormous power caused him to lose sight of honesty and integrity, leading him to distort the truth.

Another interview subject described Jobs to the FBI as a deceptive person — someone who was not totally forthright and honest and as having a tendency to distort reality in order to achieve his goals.

However, one former business associate who had a falling out with Jobs said that, while honest and trustworthy, Jobs nonetheless had questionable moral character.

The ex-business associate said he had not received stock that would have made him a wealthy man and that he felt bitter toward Jobs and felt alienated from him.

“Mr. Jobs alienated a lot of people at” Apple Computer Inc. “as a result of his ambition,” an FBI agent wrote in an interview summary.

Two people associated with Jobs at Apple told the FBI that Jobs possessed integrity as long as he got his way. They did not elaborate, the FBI agent wrote.

Previously known parts of Jobs’ life surfaced in the FBI interviews.

One person told the FBI that Jobs had a child out of wedlock and basically abandoned the mother and their daughter. The interview subject added that more recently Jobs had been supportive of them. Jobs publicly acknowledged his out-of-wedlock child.

Another interview subject told an agent that Jobs used illegal drugs, including marijuana and LSD, while in college. Jobs also publicly acknowledged drug use as a young adult.

The shake-up announced Tuesday continues a drastic makeover of Yahoo’s leadership during the past month as the company tries to win back investors frustrated with years of broken turnaround promises.

Yahoo Inc. ushered in a new era last month by hiring former PayPal executive Scott Thompson as its fourth CEO in less than five years.

Then Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang resigned from the board.

Bostock is departing along with Vyomesh Joshi, Arthur Kern and Gary Wilson.

Many Yahoo shareholders have been clamoring for Bostock to step down since the company balked a $47.5 billion takeover offer from Microsoft Corp. in 2008.

Last year’s pay consists almost entirely of 1.9 million stock options valued at $16.1 million, according to documents filed Friday. Whether Whitman ever gets an opportunity to cash in most the options will depend on whether HP’s market value rises substantially from its depressed level when HP fired her predecessor, Leo Apotheker, as CEO last September.

HP disclosed Whitman would be getting the stock options shortly after her hiring, but didn’t specify their value at that time.

The company, which is based in Palo Alto, also had previously disclosed Whitman’s salary would be limited to $1 while she tries to rebuild the momentum that HP lost after ousting Mark Hurd as its CEO in a titillating scandal in 2010.

Apotheker fared even better than Whitman, partly because of a severance package that paid him more than $12 million in cash and allowed him to keep most of the stock awards that he got while he was CEO. Including the salary and perks that Apotheker received while he was still HP’s CEO, his 2011 compensation package was valued at $26.7 million. That figure excludes a $3.7 million stock incentive that HP canceled as part of Apotheker’s severance agreement.

If Whitman succeeds in her mission at HP, she could use the windfall from the stock options to offset her losses from her unsuccessful attempt to become California’s governor in 2010. During that campaign as the Republican nominee, she spent more than $140 million of her own money.

Before entering the political arena, Whitman was best known as the CEO of eBay Inc. during the dot-com boom. She did so well there that she was a billionaire by the time she left the e-commerce company in 2008.

HP faces challenges on multiple fronts. Its personal computer division is trying to adapt to consumers’ growing preference for tablet and other mobile devices. Meanwhile, its operations that sell servers and consulting services to big companies is locked in a fierce battle with IBM Corp. and Oracle Corp.

As with most companies, HP says it is trying to tie Whitman’s compensation to the company’s performance.

Most of the stock options won’t become hers to exercise unless HP’s stock surpasses certain thresholds before October 2013.

The rights to 800,000 stock options will vest on Whitman’s first anniversary as HP’s CEO if the company’s shares have closed at or above $28.31 for 20 consecutive trading days. The price target is 20 percent above the options’ stock price of $23.59. That price requirement hasn’t been met yet, though HP’s stock has closed above $28.31 several times in the past two weeks. The shares gained 57 cents to close Friday at $29.07.

Although the stock has climbed since Whitman took over, it remains 37 percent below its price when Hurd left the company in August 2010.

Another 800,000 options will vest on Whitman’s second anniversary on the job if HP’s stock has closed at or above $33.03 for 20 consecutive trading days. That’s 40 percent above the exercise price.

The remaining 300,000 options vest in annual increments of 100,000 on Whitman’s first three anniversaries as CEO. Those awards aren’t tied to HP’s stock reaching a certain price.

Whitman, 55, also received more than $372,000 in additional compensation that stemmed from cash and stock grants that she received last year while she was a non-executive director on HP”s board.

This year, Whitman will be eligible for a bonus of up to $6 million to supplement her $1 salary if HP does well.

The Associated Press formula calculates an executive’s total compensation during the last fiscal year by adding salary, bonuses, perks, above-market interest the company pays on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year.

After ranking No. 1 last year, Forbes moved Stockton to No. 11 on its “American’s Most Miserable Cities” list, which was released Thursday. Stockton dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since at least 2008. It was No. 1 last year and No. 2 in 2010.

Miami is this year’s most miserable city, according to the list.

Other California cities to make the inglorious list: Merced (No. 15), Bakersfield (No. 17), Vallejo (No. 18) and Modesto (No. 19).

Forbes looks at the 200 largest metropolitan areas in the country and makes up its list based on 10 factors, including crime, unemployment, foreclosures, taxes, home price declines, commute times and the success of its sports teams.

Forbes noted that Sacramento is a one-team town and that team, the Kings, have been awful the last several seasons. It has also been hit hard by foreclosures, declining home prices and unemployment.

This is the fifth time Stockton has appeared in the rankings. In 2010, the city was listed as No. 2.

Sacramento also made Forbes’ list of worst places to find a job in 2011, ranking the sixth-worst.

The city is looking to lease its parking spaces in order to generate revenue to help build a new downtown sports and entertainment facility. Sacramento received 27 notifications from firms indicating they intended to respond after the city released a request for qualification on Jan. 9. From those, the city received 13 official responses by its Jan. 30 deadline.

“We are very pleased with the number and quality of responses to our request for qualifications,” said Assistant City Manager John Dangberg in a press release on Friday. “We still have a lot of work to do, but this response is encouraging.”

A team of city staff along with advisors are currently evaluating the submittals. City staff anticipates going to the City Council on Feb. 14 with a list of those companies it deems most qualified to take on the parking contract. City officials have said they hope to generate $200 million from leasing parking to go toward a new arena in the downtown railyard. The price of the new facility has been pegged at $387 million.

The NBA has requested a financing plan for the new arena be in place by March 1. Sacramento Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof have long said a new facility is essential for the team to stay in Sacramento. The team’s current home, Power Balance Pavilion in Natomas, is the oldest arena in the NBA.

The Maloofs explored a move to Anaheim after last season but backed away from the deal after Sacramento, led by Mayor Kevin Johnson, stepped up its efforts to keep the team and NBA Commissioner David Stern said he wanted to give the city one more year to try to get an arena deal in place.

In the responses for the parking lease, each firmn provided information on its qualifications, experience, financial and technical capabilities, and specific thoughts on how to create added value for the city, according to the press release.

Zynga Inc. was getting the best ride on Facebook’s coattails Thursday. Its stock jumped nearly 17 percent to close at $12.39 — for good reason. Almost all of Zynga’s revenue comes from addictive games like CityVille and Mafia Wars that are played on Facebook. The social network’s initial public offering documents revealed, for the first time, that 12 percent of its $3.7 billion in revenue last year came from Zynga.

Some of that revenue came from the 30 percent “toll” that Facebook takes on in-game purchases, the rest came from ads that Zynga bought on the site.

“It shows (Zynga’s) an important partner, they’re going to participate in Facebook’s growth,” said Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said the filing suggests there could be upside to his forecast for Zynga’s fourth-quarter earnings, which will be announced in two weeks.

He added that other Internet companies were justifiably trading higher partly because Facebook reported ad revenue growth of 69 percent in 2011.

“It shines a spotlight on the Internet sector,” Sebastian said. “There’s a lot to be excited about still among Internet stocks.”

Daily deals site Groupon Inc.’s stock rose 7.4 percent to close at $23.08, while jobs networking site LinkedIn Corp. shares rose 6.4 percent to close at $76.98, even though their revenues aren’t tied to Facebook.

Online radio service Pandora Media Inc.’s stock rose 3.3 percent to $13.32 and American depositary shares of Chinese social networking company Renren Inc. jumped 8.2 percent to $5.42.

All five companies made their stock market debuts last year. Only LinkedIn’s stock has traded consistently above its IPO price.

Maxim Group analyst Echo He said Renren is benefiting partly because it is one of the few Chinese Internet stocks that trades in the U.S. Even with Thursday’s 8 percent bump, the stock is less than half of the IPO price of $14 set last May.

Renren has less than 5 percent of Facebook’s 845 million-strong user base, isn’t growing as fast, lacks market dominance in China, and may barely be profitable this year, compared to Facebook’s hefty 27 percent net income margin, she said.

Investors “think maybe this name could get some benefit,” He said. “It probably won’t last long.”

Still, Facebook’s in-depth filing was well-received and even included a manifesto-type letter from founder Mark Zuckerberg outlining the company’s mission to “make the world more open and connected.”

The prospectus seemed to wash away some of investors’ trepidations over the unorthodox accounting methods once used by Groupon, or the surprising 5 percent dip that Zynga’s stock experienced on its first day of trading.

Gordon Tucker, a managing director at Protiviti, a company that helps companies go public, said the filing and Facebook’s healthy financial results injected a sense of confidence into the social media space.

“This social media sector is a real sector,” Tucker said. “Maybe people are saying, let’s dig back in and have a look.”

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — They paid their tuition and put in the time, but now some adult education students say they’re hearing they may not be able to graduate.

Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center culinary students say teachers told them the program would close in June, but they’re supposed to graduate in September.

Sacramento Unified School District officials say if the program closes, they’ll try to make sure students can graduate, but there are no guarantees. The district is facing a $28 million deficit.

Student would be reimbursed their tuition if they aren’t given the chance to graduate, but nothing can replace the hours they’ve already spent in the classroom.

“They can’t pay me back my time, so I could have gone to another school where I can graduate from,” student Delores Cardoza said on Monday.

The school board is expected to vote on the budget at its Thursday’s meeting.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The Sacramento Kings have a good amount of fans and more viewers this season, but that’s not translating into more dollars.

A new survey by Forbes Magazine ranks the team’s value among the lowest in the NBA.

The Kings’ value in 2007 was $385 million, good for the 12th spot in the league.

Now it’s plummeted to $300 million and money is still a hot topic.

Forbes cited that fans feel the Maloofs were bullying taxpayers into funding a new arena.

The Lakers are the No. 1 most valuable team, worth $900 million.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento’s fiscal forecast is finally changing from gloomy to growth.

“Is the narrative changing? Sure, the news is getting better,” Sacramento Metro Chamber President Roger Niello said on Tuesday in advance of a new economic report due out Wednesday.

The highly respected Sacramento Business Review will show the region’s economy bottomed out in early 2011 and is now in a slow recovery.

The forecast calls for modest improvement in unemployment and it breaks down the economy with predictions by sector.

The healthcare industry will make the biggest gains in the region, according to the report. Sutter Medical Center’s expansion is an example of some of that growth. It’ll be finished in 2013.

Government jobs will take a hit again, but less hard. The forecast predicts a contraction of up to 1 percent.

And then there are construction jobs. Linked to a continued bad housing market, they will likely stay flat.

The report also shows the public sector accounts for roughly 30 percent of the region’s economy, a number Niello identifies as too high, even for a state capital.

“I think it’s difficult to imagine we could get below 20 percent, or even 25 percent,” he said. “It’s still going to be a significant portion of our economy.”

Reaction to the predicted rebound on Sacramento streets Tuesday was skeptical.

“Not very good,” Sandra Johnson said when asked how she feels about the economy. “I’ve been without a job for over a year now, and it doesn’t seem to be very promising.”

“There’s a lot of studies that come out every day, some good some bad,” Brian Gause said. “I dont believe all of them, but you never know. I’m an eternal optimist.”

So is Sacramento’s 2012 trend a turnaround? The region has been hit by the economic downturn, but this report shows the darkest days may finally be over.

MODESTO (CBS13) — A big food processor has announced it will shut down its Modesto plant, which means 265 people will soon be out of work.

It’s another blow to struggling Stanislaus County. According to the new figures released Tuesday, the unemployment rate in Stanislaus County was 16.1 in December. That’s up from November and much higher than Sacramento county and the state’s unemployment rate.

Dawn Foods, a baking supply plant, is moving to Georigia. Experts say it won’t be easy for workers to find new jobs.

The Stanislaus County Economic Development and Workforce Alliance CEO calls the Dawn food plant closure discouraging. “Have we hit bottom? I don’t know. At times it seems like it can’t get any worse and then we get an announcement that another plant is closing down,” Bill Bassit said.

Dawn says it’s moving out of state to reduce shipping costs and be more efficient. It’s the second plant in Stanislaus County to announce a closure this month. Patterson Vegetable Company may soon close, leaving nearly 500 without a job.

“Anytime we have a displacement like this, it’s certainly disappointing because we don’t have that many new jobs we can offer to these people,” Bassit said.

The bright spot could be the so called “Project X” in Patterson. If the plan materializes, it could create 1,500 new jobs.

But people working at plants slated to close may not qualify for the new jobs.

Sarah Nicols, 28, has spent two years looking for work. While she’s eager to learn about Project X, she’d prefer work at home in Modesto.

“Our problem is we’re here in Modesto. It’s hard to get all the way out to Patterson if you don’t have a car,” she said.

Others looking for jobs point out additional plant closures mean more competition.

“That puts more people as an obstacle for me and anybody else that’s trying to get a job,” Courtney Stewart said.

Another new project on the horizon is Blue Diamond opening in Turlock, but that isn’t scheduled for another year, so it won’t help the employees at Dawn, which is slated to close in March.

MODESTO (CBS13) — The directory says it all — plenty of open office space — but the hope is sprucing up the downtown Modesto landmark will attract new business.

From the inside the dated decor isn’t hard to miss. City Mall is starting to show its age. But standing tall in the heart of downtown, the once foreclosed building is getting another chance.

Dallas-based Iron Creek Ventures purchased the 60-year-old complex and vows to fix up the place.

Iron Creek hired Modesto’s NAI Benchmark to find new tenants.

“We’re tying to freshen up the building, do some cosmetic improvements that make it more leasable for office tenants,” Ryan Swehla of NAI Benchmark said. “If we have a new alternative that’s been freshened up right here on a prime corner in downtown Modesto and offered at competitive leases rates, we think it will be a boon for the downtown office market.”

City Mall is the former JC Penney building. When the retailer moved to Vintage Faire Mall, the building transformed into an office complex and did well until the economy tanked. Now, one in three offices is empty.

With vacant store fronts plaguing downtown, nearby small businesses welcome the change and hope more than just offices move in.

“If they spruce it up and get some retail in there, it could be great for us,” said nearby business owner Mitch Maisetti.
Cosmetic changes are expected to happen in the coming months.

The Gold’s Gym in Elk Grove recently closed. Since the same group of investors owns the Gold’s on Del Paso road in Natomas, many have wondered whether they will need to find a new place to exercise.

Management tells CBS13 the Natomas location will not be closing. There are three possible buyers for the gym, but Gold’s management will not know details for at least 30 days

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — It’s an iconic shopping center, but Town & Country Village is losing cash, customers and business.

There are plans in the works for a major renovation, but some longtime tenants fear they could be left behind.

From the shop owners CBS13 spoke tom, the big domino to fall was William Glen. It was the biggest store here for 47 years, but it closed in 2010. And now, many of the other stores here will follow.

After 25 years at Town & Country Village, gallery shop owner Helen Jones was given just over three months to leave.

“We need to vacate by March 31,” she said. “It’s kind of overwhelming because I would have liked a little more time. I have a lot of inventory.”

Helen was told by management that the state’s oldest shopping mall is undergoing some changes, which she thinks means some of it will be torn down — the end of an era in Sacramento that dates back to 1947.

“Personal attention, personal convenience, and it’s local.”

That’s what shoppers here say they will miss if major changes take place, and big box stores replace the boutiques.

Mark Snyder will lose a piece of his childhood, his father opened William Glen in 1963. It was replaced by Goore’s and soon after that went out of business.

“It’s an icon for Sacramento, it was The Fountains of Sacramento,” he said. “It’s definitely a shame.”

Mark has opened his own shop in Old Sac.

Stephanie Nishikawa moved her paper shop out of Town and Country after William Glenn moved out.

“We knew we had to do something and we had the opportunity to come to The Pavilions (in Roseville). There was a space open and we took it.”

CBS13 wanted to find out exactly what the plans are at Town & Country, but the owners of the mall have not returned our calls.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — It could be a big boost to Sacramento’s economy, but it could also be a very big risk: a multi-million dollar development in the heart of the city featuring new shops and apartments.

Holding a needle and thread for what they describe as the “next stitch” in downtown Sacramento’s urban fabric, city officials and the development group held a groundbreaking Thursday for an 84-unit apartment building above 13,000 square feet of retail space.

“This is a great day,” Councilman Rob Fong said.

They’ve already moved the dirt to start building the project at 16th and O streets. It’s estimated to create 300 to 400 jobs by its completion date of mid-2013.

“Arguably this could be almost the new center of downtown-midtown,” developer Scott Rasmussen said.

Rasmussen’s development group is using its own money as well as bank financing to build the project. It’s supported by leaders like Congresswoman Doris Matsui, who believes it’s a boom — not a bust — to build it in the struggling economy.

“The planning is much more reasonable and careful now,” she said. “People are not going to do things that aren’t going to be successful.”

Nathaniel Gallardo manages Mochi Yogurt just a block away from the project. The small shop has survived the recession while he’s seen others in the area go.

“I think it’ll be pretty easy to attract retailers, but I think the problem might be keeping them there,” Gallardo said. “I don’t think it’s as high traffic as people might think.”

Rasmussen said he’s certainly aware of the risks.

“I wouldn’t be a developer if I told you I didn’t have some concerns about retail leasing, but we love this location,” he said.

Only time will tell if this project will be seamless.

“I’d like to think they’re hitting the economy at the right time,” Fong said. “A year and a half from now, I think we’ll be in good shape.”

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Home Depot is getting ready for their busiest season of the year…the remodeling season. And they need to hire one-thousand workers in the Sacramento area.

The Spring is the company’s busiest selling season. Nationwide, they plan on hiring 70,000 seasonal workers.

“Just as the Christmas rush and holiday hiring ends for many retailers, we begin recruiting for spring seasonal associates to help customers during our busiest selling season,” said Tim Crow, executive vice president for Human Resources. “And a seasonal job at The Home Depot can often lead to a regular position if you’re passionate about customer service.”

The company says about half of the seasonal workers hired last year stayed on in permanent positions as cashiers, sales associates, lot associates and garden associates, to name a few.

PATTERSON (CBS13) – There’s a mysterious plan being undertaken in the Central Valley only known as “Project X”.

And while it’s shrouded in secrecy, it could mean 15-hundred new jobs if it gets off the ground.

There’s a 120 acres of dirt in Patterson where the million-square-foot warehouse is being planned.

The Modesto Bee is reporting an unnamed source saying the project has an element of internet retail.

All eyes are on Amazon. The internet giant struck a deal last year with Governor Jerry Brown to create 10,000 jobs in California in exchange for a delay on imposing sales taxes for online purchases.

“I’ve heard a distribution, a call center we’re gonna wait and see what that is. If it’s Amazon, or any other company, we again welcome and look forward to building a strong relationship with them.” Said Patterson Mayor Luis Molina.

For Patterson, population 20,000 and unemployment at 20 percent, Project X could be like winning the jackpot to the job lottery.

This is a fast moving project. Backers will close escrow Friday, break ground next week, and build around the clock 24/7 in order to open September 30.

LINDA (CBS13) — Pornographic toys, magazines and videos were stolen from a Linda sex shop, but the store’s owner is surprised by what wasn’t taken.

Kevin Couch owns Fantasy Factory across the street from a strip club, and Monday night someone broke into his adult store. But the culprits never touched the cash register.

“They just took the toys and left,” he said. “They didn’t take the money or anything so I was lost. The sheriff’s department was lost. When he saw all the stuff in here and he goes ‘that’s all they took?’ and I was like ‘yeah.’”

So Kevin thinks it was kids just trying to make a little mischief in forbidden territory.

“They see the adult store here, they can’t come in here they can’t purchase this stuff so they are bored and they break in and come in and take it at night when no one is here,” he said.

So far, there are no suspects, just a suspected age range: boys probably about 13 to 17 years old.

“If I was to do it I’d probably go for cash, not adult toys,” Linda resident Rodney Foster said. “I don’t really understand why somebody would take that, that’s kind of gross and weird.”

The thieves busted in by using a chunk of asphalt to crash through the door. It will cost Kevin about $800 to fix the door and he’s out about $150 worth of merchandise.

It’s the second time his store has been broken into in a year.

LAKE TAHOE (CBS13) — There’s no snow up in the Sierras so resorts are getting creative to attract customers.

You don’t need snow to enjoy smores and ice skating at Northstar, for example.

“This is such a quality experience,” said Northstar visitor Lynn Abate of Sonoma County. “I couldn’t imagine it’d be a bad experience.”

Northstar is pulling out all the stops, offering perks like stay and ski free.

A star-studded mountain also helps.

“People are curious about Sean White, the super pipe and other athletes that are training here,” Northstar’s Davy Ratchford said. “That’s a big way to get the message out here.”

Resorts are also pumping out artificial snow for groomed slopes among the mountains of mud. And people also exploring not-so-winter-like activities such as rock climbing, hiking, bike riding and even paddle boating.

Many restaurants like The Rocker at Squaw Valley are also offering screaming deals like two meals for $20 or kids eat free.

And for just over a $100 bucks, two adults can stay at The Village and ski all day, or for $65 get lessons, rentals and a lift ticket. Unheard of bargains for this time of year, but a compromise since not much terrain is open.

On the flip side over at Boreal the lack of snow is allowing them to keep the terrain park open. They say they’ve met budget nearly every day because jumps and tricks are all certain riders want.

So when we ask people about this winter, the answer seems to be winter is what you make of it.

California’s North Coast is scheduled to open to commercial crab fishing on Sunday.

The northern California fishery normally opens Dec. 1, but the season was delayed because the crustaceans weren’t mature enough to harvest.

State biologists say this is the latest the North Coast crab season has started in two decades.

The central California fishery officially opened on Nov. 15, but the season was delayed by a couple weeks because fishermen and buyers couldn’t agree on price.

The central California fishery hasn’t been as productive as last year when crabbers hauled a whopping 19 million pounds.

VACAVILLE (CBS13) – A freshly-squeezed lawsuit is calling into question just how fresh Tropicana orange juice really is.

This is a new one. We’re going to call this a fruit suit. This lawsuit is certainly a talker as a Vacaville woman is taking on juice giant Tropicana.

The label is as clear as day on the front of the Tropicana bottle: 100% pure and natural, but how much thought do we all give, to what’s actually going into our glass each morning?

“It’s orange juice; I don’t expect rocket science,” said Dave Garrison a shopper.

Like Garrison, if you answered, “not much” you’re not alone.

Then there’s the other extreme. Angelena Lewis from Vacaville filed a 25-page lawsuit claiming Tropicana is using false advertising because their juice is not 100% pure and natural.

“Some people just want to sue for anything whether it be handicap parking or the weather,” said Bill Abeling, a shopper.

The federal lawsuit claims Tropicana orange juice is processed and flavored in order to make it last longer on store shelves. Despite the fact the bottle does say it’s pasteurized, Lewis claims she would not have made the purchase if the bottle was labeled correctly.

But shoppers we talked to were sour to the idea of a lawsuit.

“You want the real orange juice, well squeeze your own. No I’m sorry, then you know it would be 100%,” said Carnelia Smith, a shopper.

But lewis isn’t alone in this juice jostle. Some OJ enthusiasts think she might be on to something.

“We want to buy what the product says it’s selling. If it’s 100% we want it, if it’s not, we don’t,” said Joanna Tholstrum, a shopper.

And while this juice suit has outsiders talking, the involved parties aren’t talking right now. We’ve gotten no responses yet from the attorney for Lewis or from Tropicana.

Tropicana’s website says their Pure Premium brand has 16 fresh-picked oranges in each 59-ounce container.

Air quality in the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Valley is the poorest it’s been in years. State fire officials have warned of an increased fire danger in Northern California, and ski resorts in the Sierras have been forced to turn to artificial snow.

December was among the driest on record in Northern California. The state Department of Water Resources reported the snowpack water content throughout the Sierra at 19 percent of the average for early January.

And rain is not in the forecast for at least the next week, according to the National Weather Service.

The lack of rainfall and wind has kept car exhaust and smoke from factories and chimneys in place, leading to repeated violations of federal health standards for fine particle pollution in the San Francisco Bay area and Central Valley.

The lack of precipitation has also raised the fire danger, the CalFire has said.

The agency said it responded to more wildfires in December than usual. It has increased staffing, cancelled burn days and even banned debris burning.

The dry weather follows abundant precipitation last year, when Sierra ski resorts enjoyed one of the snowiest winters in decades.

Tahoe City, located on Lake Tahoe’s northwest shore, had 11.4 inches of precipitation in December last year. It only received a trace of that this December.

For most Sierra ski resorts, that has meant turning to expensive snow-making machines to keep the slopes running.

“Certainly there is a cost of putting man-made snow on the ground,” Andy Chapman, chief marketing officer for the North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, told the Chronicle last month. “Obviously the resorts have done this for years and years, understand risk-benefit ratio, and have decided it’s well worth it.”

Southern California, meanwhile, has enjoyed record-high temperatures. About a dozen places broke records on Thursday, including UCLA at 86 degrees. San Diego’s Lindbergh Field had 83, snapping a 1969 record by 3 degrees.

STOCKTON (CBS13) — The national unemployment rate dropped to 8.5 percent in December, the lowest rate in nearly three years, with the addition of 200,000 new jobs. But closer to home in Stockton, the lines were running long at a job fair on Friday.

When the doors first opened at the downtown Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium, hundreds lined up, and when they heard about the national economy improving, many just shook their heads. Some of these people haven’t had work in years.

Electrician Jesus Moreno can’t quite remember how many jobs he’s applied for since he’s been out of work. National numbers notwithstanding, unemployment in Stockton is still sky high at 15 percent.

“I lost count it’s so many,” he said of job applications. “I wanna say maybe 50? I’m not seeing any change at all.”

He’s back on the job hunt hopeful to finally find an opportunity. Friday’s event offered a chance to get face to face with potential employers in the construction industry.

“I’ve been out of work three years,” said a man who identified himself just as Larry. “Ain’t nothin’ I can’t build or tear down. I’m ready to work. I have three kids and need some money.”

The job fair was originally intended for a new health facility to be built in Stockton but was expanded to include opportunities from the city, San Joaquin County Public Works, Caltrans and other contractors.

All told, organizers say hundreds, if not several thousand jobs could be available. Perhaps it’s hope that things could finally be turning around in one of the hardest-hit cities in California.

Still, the line stretched down the block.

While several retailers reaped record profits, sales fell 4.4 percent at Kmart stores and six percent at Sears during the eight weeks leading up to Christmas.

Kmart blames diminished layaways, while Sears cites lackluster consumer electronics and home appliance sales.

The closings will generate up to $170 million in inventory sales.

Sears hasn’t revealed which of its Southland stores will be closing.

“Given our performance and the difficult economic environment, especially for big-ticket items, we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” CEO Louis D’Ambrosio said. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers.”

Officials at Supervalu Inc., Walgreen Co., Kroger Co. and Safeway said Friday they have removed cans of Enfamil Newborn with the lot number ZP1K7G from various stores across the country. They say it’s a precaution until health officials complete tests on the formula.

Ten-day-old Avery Cornett died Sunday after getting sick several days earlier. Preliminary hospital tests indicated he died of a rare infection caused by bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii.

The source of the bacteria that caused the infection hasn’t been determined, but it can be found in dried milk and powdered formula.

STOCKTON (CBS13) – Shoppers waited in the cold for hours at local stores just to get their hands on a new pair of the Air Jordan shoes.

At Weberstown Mall in Stockton, some people lined up outside overnight to get the Air Jordan Concord XI shoes. Some shoppers were able to get inside through an unsecured door, but were kicked out by mall security.

Once the doors opened, chaos broke out as shoppers pushed and shoved to get inside. Two doors on the mall were broken and barriers were tossed aside and bent. Shoppers lost jackets, shoes and other personal belongings. One woman says she was punched in the mouth.

“A lot of chaos; I was punched in the face. Yes, punched in the face in my mouth. So it is a good thing I have braces so I still have my teeth,” she said

One man said someone pulled out a knife.

It was a similar scene at other malls across Northern California.

The shoes cost $180.
