SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento is only one of two heart transplant programs in Northern California. And CBS13 was there Tuesday as they discharged their 155th patient.

They say no man is a good doctor who has never been sick himself. For one local doctor, that proved to be true after receiving his own transplant.

Research doctor Stephan Lakos suffered heart failure after years of disease, and faced certain death. But doctors implanted a life saving device that kept him alive for nine months until he hear then news he was getting a new heart.

“This is what we call an LVAC, a machine we implant in the body to assist pumping of the heart,” said Sutter Dr. Robert Kincade

The new heart was successfully implanted days ago. A week later, the 69-year-old is out the door.

“This guy was sicker than the typical patient, but he’s doing so good,” said Sutter Dr. John Chin. “His recovery time and everything else is so much quicker.”

The Hungarian-born doctor who was granted political asylum in the back in the 1980′s is getting yet another chance at a better life — this time from his own kind.

“Oh, I feel great,” said Dr. Lakos. “They are the best doctors in the world,” he said, referring to the doctors who performed the operation.

When he was first diagnosed, Dr. Lakos was told he had just six months to live. Now, with his new heart, he’s looking forward to another two decades, leaving his best friend, Lad Wentzel, both emotional and ready to hold him to an old promise.

“Let me tell you, we have a deal we made two years ago. You’re taking me to Budapest because I want to see all these things you talk about,” said Wentzel.

With promises to fulfill and projects to complete, the doctor who became the patient also hopes to one day become a donor.

By having these life-saving programs available at Sutter Memorial, patients from the Sacramento Valley can continue to receive their surgery and lifetime care, close to home.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Oregon company is recalling a frozen berry mix sold to Costco and Harris Teeter stores after the product was linked to at least 34 hepatitis A illnesses in five states.

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that Townsend Farms of Fairview, Ore., is recalling its frozen Organic Antioxidant Blend, packaged under the Townsend Farms label at Costco and under the Harris Teeter brand at those stores.

Illnesses were reported in Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California. Hawaii health officials are also investigating three cases of hepatitis A in people who have eaten the frozen berry product.

The recall came three days after the FDA and the federal Centers for Disease Control first announced a suspected link between the berries and the illnesses. The agency did not say why there was not an immediate recall.

Costco has stores across the country, while Harris Teeter stores are in eight East Coast states and the District of Columbia. Both grocery chains have said they have pulled the product from store shelves.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that can last from a few weeks to a several months. People often contract it when an infected food handler prepares food without appropriate hand hygiene. Food already contaminated with the virus can also cause outbreaks.

The FDA said it is inspecting the processing facilities of Townsend Farms. The CDC said the strain of hepatitis is rarely seen in North or South America but is found in the North Africa and Middle East regions.

Bill Gaar, a lawyer for Townsend Farms, said last week that the frozen organic blend bag includes pomegranate seeds from Turkey. The seeds are only used in the product associated with the outbreak and no other Townsend Farms products, he said.

“We do have very good records, we know where the (pomegranate seeds) came from, we’re looking into who the broker is and we’re sourcing it back up the food chain to get to it,” Gaar said.

Hepatitis A illnesses occur within 15 to 50 days of exposure to the virus. Symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine and pale stool.

Vaccination can prevent illness if given within two weeks of exposure, and those who have already been vaccinated are unlikely to become ill, according to CDC.

CDC said the first illnesses were reported at the end of April. The same genotype of hepatitis A was identified in an outbreak in Europe linked to frozen berries this year, the CDC said, as well as a 2012 outbreak in British Columbia related to a frozen berry blend with pomegranate seeds from Egypt. In addition to the United States and Turkey, the agency said the Townsend Farms berries also included products from Argentina and Chile.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thousands of workers at University of California medical centers began a two-day strike on Tuesday that prompted the postponement of dozens of surgeries amid reassurances that patients were safe.

A union representing some 13,000 hospital pharmacists, nursing assistants, operating room scrubs and other health care workers began the walkout at 4 a.m. at medical facilities in San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, San Francisco and Sacramento.

Nurses were not on strike, emergency rooms were open, and about 450 union employees remained in critical jobs under court order.

The hospitals had prepared for the strike by postponing non-essential surgeries, hiring hundreds of temporary workers and having supervisors do some jobs.

No major problems were reported in the initial hours of the strike as green-shirted picketers gathered in front of hospitals.

“We are prepared to take care of everybody in a safe fashion,” said Dr. Tom Rosenthal, chief medical officer of UCLA Hospital Systems.

About 30 surgeries were being postponed through the strike period at Los Angeles-area facilities, Rosenthal said.

More than 200 surgeries were rescheduled at San Diego and Orange County medical facilities, officials told City News Service.

The union is battling the university system over staffing and pension issues.

“We care about our patients and we feel that we’re chronically understaffed and we need additional help,” Ruben Gomez, a radiation therapist in Los Angeles, told KCBS-TV.

There was no clear count of how many union workers had joined the walkout, which was set to last until early Thursday.

“We are well into the thousands” of employees, said Todd Stenhouse, a spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

However, Rosenthal said a preliminary estimate indicated that more than half of union employees had reported for work at UC facilities in the Los Angeles area.

Stenhouse said the labor dispute involved chronic and dangerously low staffing levels. The union is concerned that the UC system is using trainees and volunteers in some positions in a bid to save money, he said.

“If you’re going to a hospital, do you want to be subjected to a learning curve when your life is at stake?” he asked. “We really undermine our ability to provide quality care.”

Overworked employees are skipping lunches and breaks to do their jobs, he contended. One operating room technician has been working 22-hour shifts at his hospital or on call, he added.

UC officials say the real issue is a refusal by the union to accept a new pension plan — similar to those of other state workers — that requires more employee contributions and reduces long-term benefits for new hires.

The hospital system could face billions of dollars in new pension costs unless there is reform, Rosenthal said.

May 10, 2013 — Taking antibiotics could relieve symptoms of chronic lower back pain for up to 40% of people, according to a new study.

Danish researchers say they’ve found a link between many cases of back pain and infection from bacteria.

Some experts have questioned how many people are likely to benefit from this treatment. Others have cautioned that boosting antibiotic use in the face of growing resistance could be counterproductive and lead to more superbugs.

Widespread Complaint

Back pain is a common condition, affecting about 4 out of 5 people at some point in their lives.

Recommended treatments include painkillers, hot or cold compresses, lifestyle changes, physical therapy, and keeping active. In extreme cases, when other treatments have failed, surgery may be carried out to remove part of a damaged disc.

Bacterial Infection

The latest studies from the University of Southern Denmark build on previous research, which shows that between 7% and 53% of patients with herniated discs have a type of bacteria. In these patients the bacteria entered the disc at the time it was herniated, or “slipped.”

In the first study of 61 patients who had spinal surgery for lower back pain, the researchers found bacteria in 46% of the slipped discs.

In a second study, the research team recruited 162 patients who had been living with low back pain for more than 6 months following a slipped disc. Half of the patients were given a 100-day course of antibiotic treatment, while the others received a placebo.

After a 1-year follow-up period, those who’d taken antibiotics were less likely to still have lower back pain and physical disability. They were also less likely to have leg pain and to have taken days off work because of their back.

The researchers estimate that about 35% to 40% of people with long-term back pain have excess fluid in the spinal vertebrae and might benefit from this type of treatment.

The findings are published in the European Spine Journal.

‘Not a Cure’

Media reports that antibiotics could be a cure for back pain have alarmed John O’Dowd, a consultant spinal surgeon and president of the British Society for Back Pain Research.

“Unless you’ve had a disc herniation … I don’t think you should be getting too excited, and I don’t think this is going to be a treatment for you,” O’Dowd says. ”I think this is another useful building block of evidence, but I don’t think it’s either a cure or the answer to back pain.”

May 14, 2013 — Actress and activist Angelina Jolie’s recent decision to have a preventive double mastectomy highlights the difficult choices facing women who find out they have a high risk for breast cancer because of their genes.

Although relatively rare, mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes raise the risk of breast cancer by as much as 80%, experts say. The mutations also raise the risk of ovarian cancer.

Jolie describes in a New York Times op-ed piece why she decided to go through with the surgery. At 37, the mother of six wants to stay healthy and active for her family — and to reassure them that she is doing everything possible to avoid the disease that took her mother’s life: cancer.

“I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy,” Jolie writes. “But it is one that I am very happy I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”

WebMD asked breast surgeon Shelley Hwang, MD, chief of breast surgery and professor of surgery at Duke University Medical Center and Duke Cancer Institute, to fill us in on what else women need to know. Hwang did not treat Jolie.

Why do women undergo a preventive double mastectomy?

In Angelina Jolie’s case, she had a mutation that puts her at very high risk for getting breast cancer at some point in her life. Right now the most effective prevention that we have for [this] BRCA mutation carrier is a prophylactic double mastectomy.

It is always a double mastectomy because both breasts are at risk and you don’t know which breast is going to get breast cancer when women have a BRCA mutation.

How many women have the BRCA mutation?

Only about 5% of all breast cancers are in women who have this genetic mutation.

Is the breast cancer linked with this mutation more aggressive than others?

Yes, BRCA mutations are associated with a more aggressive breast cancer that is known as “triple negative.”

Do some experts think that performing a double mastectomy is too radical for those who test positive for BRCA mutations?

I think most breast cancer experts would agree that the choice is really the patient’s to make, and I really want to emphasize, it is a choice.

Preventive mastectomy is one very excellent choice. But another choice women can consider when they know they carry a BRCA mutation is early detection. And that comes with more active screening.

What would that involve?

If a woman knows she has a BRCA mutation and does not want to have a mastectomy, a good alternative is to have a mammogram and a breast MRI every year.

You can do both at once or choose to alternate. [For my patients] I choose to alternate, doing one test every 6 months.

It’s not as effective because by definition you are picking up cancer as it develops. But it is effective at picking up cancer at a very early stage.

If a woman has a preventive double mastectomy, what are the benefits and risks?

In women at higher risk — those with BRCA mutations — preventive surgery can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 90%. If the [increased] risk is 80% as it is for many BRCA carriers, this can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 90%.

In other words, this can reduce the risk to that lower than the general population. The risks [of the mastectomy] are not that great. Most women having preventive mastectomies are younger patients, and many choose to get reconstruction. A lot of the risk has to do with the implants, like implant complications, or other risks [linked with surgery] such as infections or bleeding.

Who should consider BRCA testing?

The women who should absolutely consider it are those who themselves have had a triple-negative breast cancer, the kind associated with BRCA mutations, at an early age, under 45, people who have had both ovarian and breast cancer in family members, and people who have breast cancer in the family and are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.

What is involved in testing for BRCA mutations?

It is a simple blood test, or they can swab the inside of your cheek. The best way to get this test is to go for counseling from a genetic counselor. Have them talk to you about the possibility of testing positive. Women really need to be counseled about what this means, what the results mean, what their risk is, and then to make the decision about whether to get the test.

If you only get tested for the three most common mutations, results take about 2 weeks. The more comprehensive test, where they do gene sequencing, can take a month.

What is the cost and who pays?

The cost is about $3,000. The cost of testing is covered by many insurance companies [if you are deemed high risk].
