SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – It’s a new era for the Sacramento Kings and preparations are underway at Cesar Chavez Park for a major celebration of the purple reign.

“I have purple in my blood,” said Tanya Chakrabarty, special events manager for the Kings.

The final pieces to the “Long Live The Kings Rally” are being placed.

“This is a huge, huge, massive undertaking to entertain and create a wonderful fun event for the entire city of Sacramento,” said Chakrabarty.

Crews have already set up scaffolding equipped with lights, built a stage and constructed a VIP section of tents that include flat screen TVs and couches.

“We just found out on Tuesday; I found out Tuesday afternoon that this was going,” said Donald Vasquez, owner of Made in the Shade Tent Rentals.

Since the phone call, Vasquez had crews working as late as 10 p.m. Wednesday to get ready for the rally.

“We’re bringing in all the lounge furniture, plus they had us set up the tents yesterday and they’re coming back today to put doors on the bigger tents,” said Vasquez.

Kings officials say they are ready for a king-sized party that includes former players Chris Webber and Bobby Jackson, as well as current stars Tyreke Evans and Isaiah Thomas.

Thousands of fans are expected to converge at Cesar Chavez Park, and they know it’s more than just keeping the Kings.

“It means jobs for people; it means it’s lifted the spirit of Sacramento, and we need that with everything going on in the world,” said Kings fan Linda Snow.

The “Long Live The Kings Rally” will be held from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. in Cesar Chavez Park in downtown Sacramento and will be attended by the new majority owner of the Kings, Vivek Ranadivé — along with some general partners including 24 Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov and former Facebook executive Chris Kelly — Mayor Kevin Johnson, team mascot Slamson, Kings Dancers and other special guests, according to a press release issued by the team Sunday.

Kings legends Chris Webber and Mitch Richmond — along with former players Scot Pollard and Bobby Jackson — will join current players Tyreke Evans and Isaiah Thomas as the rally’s special guests. Kings broadcaster Grant Napear and Kings announcer Scott Moak will also be attending.

Headlining the evening’s musical acts will be “Glee” star Chord Overstreet and his father, Grammy Award-winning country singer Paul Overstreet.

The performances will also include local rapper Alex Johnson, Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon, and performance painter David Garibaldi — who will be accompanied by the Kings Breakers.

The rally is a celebration of the Kings staying in the capital city and marks the triumphant end to a long fight waged by Mayor Johnson, fans, the team’s new owners and many others.

The event is free and attendees are encouraged to come decked out in their Kings-branded attire. They’re also being asked to share their experiences at the rally on twitter using the hashtag #LLTKRally.

Street parking is available in the area as well as parking structures on 10th Street between J and I Streets — across from the park — the Sheraton Grand parking structure on the corner of J and 13th Streets, and the library between 9th and 10th Streets on J Street.

Police are ordering several road closures around the rally site. Ninth Street between I Street and J Street will be closed from 6 a.m. to midnight.

There’s a certain buzz and happiness on the ticket sales floor. It’s something they haven’t seen in Sacramento for years.

“Our fans are really amped to get their season tickets,” said Chris Clark, Kings’ director of public relations.

Just 30 minutes into selling tickets, the Kings said they couldn’t keep up with the demand.

“We’re seeing an overwhelming demand for those in number we haven’t seen in probably 10 years around here,” said Clark.

The phones just kept lighting up.

“We’re getting one new season ticket inquiry for every three minutes during business hours, and we’re renewing season ticket holders that already have had seats from last season at a record pace,” he said.

Clark says a special treat is in store for the fans in June when they’ll be invited back to the arena to test drive the seat of their choice.

“It’s a big advantage. It’s different than say going online and looking at a seating chart and picking your seat that way,” he said. We know you’re going to have the 41 games plus three preseason games. We want you to know what you are getting. We want you to enjoy that seat.”

The team hiring between 40 and 50 sales associates, who they hope to have working by Friday.

The Kings haven’t publicly announced the prices of season tickets or single-game tickets. They say they will release that information in the next few weeks.
